I usually like most of the apps since they are very useful for any situations. But what I like the most is photography apps. It’s kind of hard to take a picture with the camera supplied, but many apps help us to take it better/easier. Also, can be photoshopped! It’s very convenient.

Also, I like mapping apps. I usually like to find new places to go or visit, but sometimes it’s hard to find the location of them. However, mapping apps help me to find the location of the place and also, most importantly, the location of myself. So I know which part I’m at and how close I am. Very useful for these kinds of situations.

Does internet democratize the consumer? Is privacy a concern?

In my opinion on this week’s blog posting subject, I think internet may be democratizing the consumer. Mostly, people have rights to suggest ideas without anyone’s permission, and when people have problems or questions, they can ask others in all over the world through internet and maybe even discuss it with each other. The only thing is that there are some rules for using internet and the most important one can be plagarism. You are not supposed to steal others’ ideas without permission, but if it is opened/allowed for everyone, then no problem. Internet is a cyber world. Real people are in it and everything is real, but it’s not exactly like a nation like Canada. It’s just one world. So, it can democratize all of people in the world and give them rights to upfront they would like. Unless the site is locked for strangers, then it could be just for privacy. Now, is privacy a concern? Yes, definitely. By using internet, many people have lost faith/belief in it because there has been so much of hacking information that must be secured. Do people want their private information or data to be spread out? Many people always doubt if whatever they see is true or not fake, such as auction sites or selling any products sites. Even social networks may concern many of us because it’s just through the machine, not face to face conversation/transaction, etc. So nowadays, many bank sites have their own security installing system that can be at least protected a bit. Even until now, people cannot trust internet perfectly, so it should be more focused trying to secure private information so we all can use it safe and trust even more.

Two readings

Both readings are telling us about the historical change in our society. As we can see, from the book “Contemporary Sociology”, the author is trying to emphasize how the sociology is important and it’s written in a more realistic way of showing our actual changes of societies. The author states how the world is experiencing changes. For example, stating about globalization and how it is related to the historical change.

For the next reading, to me, it talks mostly about the health issue that is related to the evolution of human beings and about the postmodernism. The author brought up about Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg”. She is suggesting a very dangerous theory that is pretty much againsting the actual human beings. She thinks that the health issues such as AIDS can be prevented through cyborg concept.

In my opinion, I like both opinions but I would rather the first one about the sociology. Since ideas about postmodernism is a little bit hard to make it come true and there still are people who don’t believe in such things like that. More realistical way is better to believe in and something that I see that can be true.

Folksonomy

Folksonomy can be easily defined as tagging people’s thoughts. I think what determines the structure of folksonomy is what people think. Because, since it’s not the formally tagged as texanomy, people decide to tag their posts by sometimes using their senses of humour, their feelings, and their thoughts. So it could be the code that determines the folksonomy. But, I also think that the social process works too. By tagging words that people are interested in, they can look for more people around them who are in the same interest as them. They can be friends if they wanted to. So by trying to have social activities through interesting tags, they can access more wider locations through it, and it shows us that the globalization is in process. The globalization here can be defined as to spread information on the other parts of the world. I can’t say that folksonomy helped the world to be globalized all the way, but I can say that it is helping the world to become more closer to each other whether the languages are different or cultures are different since the interests individual contains can be the same or similar. Also, people can figure out what in the world is the most interesting subjects that others think it is.

Wikis Effective?

In our lives, Wikipedia is one of the most important site we always use. We can find all of our definitions and information through Wikis. Sometims I even look at Wikis to find definition for words used in ISTB01 since I am not familiar with some of the words.

The actual meaning of “effective” is “adequate to accomplish a purpose”. So, by means of effective communication, it means if it is right to achieve a communication. I think Wikis is very effective for communicating, because if this was not existed, then I wouldn’t be able to study more for this course conveniently. Even when I wanted to learn more about the history of different countries, it didn’t even take a minute to find it. So, it is a communication between people and the world outside and also people to people. It is very important because communicating with all others is very hard to do, especially with the world. Therefore, having Wikis close to us, it helps us to achieve communicating with the world we would like to see.

Also, people out there want us to know what they know and we see it. Then this also accomplishes a communication with them. Without sites like Wikis, we wouldn’t be able to find all kinds of information we want and what the writers want us to know.

Should we be worried about digital divide?

We definitely should worry about digital divide. In developed countries, most of people have access to different kinds of technologies including computers, televisions and radios that we can get the information fast. We also have books to get to know lots of information, but it takes too much time and it may not be the latest information. For that reason, we started to use computers and televisions more, so we are able to find information we need to know. However, in developing countries, there are many people who are not able to have access to any of those that we always have. It is a very unfortunate thing because we know what is happening with the world, but they may not. Lack of access brings them a lot of inconveniences. First of all, they are lack of physical access to technology. In some countries, it is hard for them to pay for all of the machines so all of them can have access. Secondly, they are also lack of resources and skills to be a citizen who is living in digital world. They do not know how to use computers or even how to make them. Third of all, they are lack of information and knowledge. Because they cannot use different kind of machines, it is hard for them to get closer to information and knowledge that they may need. Finally, as Marvin suggested, electricity is the first invention that communicates us all through technologies we are having now. However, some of the countries, they do not have access to electricity so even though they do have technologies to use, they cannot use it since no electricity. It’s sad about the fact that we enjoy a lot through all of these technologies, but they have not had any of these chances.
